Going to the hospital
If you are very sick, you might have to stay in the hospital for a long time. Sometimes it can even be months or longer. This can make it hard to see your friends and do the things you like to do, but it is important that you get the care you need.

Keeping up with School
You
may be in a hospital that can bring school to you. This type of program will
bring teachers, books, and computers to the hospital so that you can learn and
get treatment at the same time. This program will also help you get ready to
go back to your school when you leave the hospital. Talk with your parents about
asking your hospital and school if a program like this can be put together for
you.
Even with the help of programs like this, going in and out of the hospital can be tough. It is sad to miss out on fun things at school and time with your friends, but try to have a good attitude and focus on feeling better.
Helpful Tips:
Keep in touch by phone and e-mail as much as you can.- Invite your friends to come visit you, if you are able to have visitors. Hospitals might be scary for people who have never been to one, but tell your friends not to worry and that their visits will help you feel better.
- Make friends with other young people who know how you feel – both in the hospital and in cyberspace. The Starbright Foundation has an on-line program to help you talk with others who are going through the same thing you are. You can also visit the room for teens or kids at your hospital. You will find fun things to do, and it is a good way to make friends who know how you feel.
- Find an activity you like to do that helps you feel less worried or sad, such as writing in a journal.
